BABYLON, NY — “Resilient” Rebel is a resident of the Babylon Animal Shelter and is Patch’s Pet of the Week.
At just six years old, he’s been through more than any young pup should after an “upsetting past,” long-time shelter volunteer Christine Franke told Patch.
She explained that Rebal was rescued from living in a shed in Florida before he was moved to New York. After that, he “bounced around” for a while, she added.
Rebel was later adopted by a man who Franke said “fell on hard times and lost his home.”
Eventually, Rebel and his owner lived out of a car for a while before the man returned him to the shelter.
“He loved Rebel so much. It was a very sad moment when I had to take the leash from Rebel’s owner,” said staff member Lyndsey Grosjean.

Despite the hardship he’s faced, Rebel remains hopeful and full of love.
According to Franke, Rebel is a “smart, sweet and very loving boy with a silliness to him.”
When it comes to the right fit for a Rebel and a family, Franke said he’d thrive best as the only pet in the house.
But anyone interested in welcoming Rebel into their family won’t have to do it alone. Franke said that the shelter staff will be there to provide any support needed for a “successful transition.”
“He really is an amazing boy that would make someone happy,” said Grosjean.

Normal adoption hours at the shelter are Monday to Friday from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
In the meantime, the shelter needs experienced large dog handlers and its staff is happy to train interested dog lovers.
There’s also an abundance of bunnies, kittens and cats to spend time with too, Franke said. Anyone interested in volunteering may contact the shelter by calling the number above or emailing BASvolunteers80@gmail.com.
