SANTA MONICA, CA — Applications are open now for Santa Monica’s first-ever poet laureate.
The Santa Monica Post Laureate will share the love of poetry with the community by creating an annual poem, running writing workshops or poetry readings and participating in local and city events.

“This program helps to ensure that the literary arts are celebrated and remain accessible to the Santa Monica community and its visitors,” Library Director Erica Cuyugan said. “We look forward to collaborating with our future poet to weave together the many voices and experiences that make up the beautiful fabric of our community.”
The honorary position will serve a two-year term and will receive an annual stipend of $5,000. The person selected as the city’s poet laureate will be announced on Feb. 13, 2024, and they will begin work on March 1.
Candidates will be reviewed by a panel made up of members of the Art Commission, Library Board, Friends of the Library Board and city staff. The program is open to Santa Monica residents who are 18 or older.
Applications will close on Dec. 18 at 8 p.m. Applicants can submit an electronic application or pick up a paper application at any Santa Monica Public Library location.
