The South Dakota State wrestling team sent wrestlers to the Quality Hotel Open and won two championships.
Troy Morisette and Trey Hable won championships at the 174- and 184-pound weight classes, respectively. Will James (141), Ben Schwery (165) and Hunter Weddington (184) placed, as well.
Morisette opened the day with a 10-1 major decision versus Logan Henning (Augustana) and scored a pin in 3:51 versus Kale Hintz (Concordia) in the quarterfinals. In the semifinals, Morisette battled Drake Fanslau (Augustana) and won by the narrowest of margins, a 1-0 decision to advance to the finals. In the 174-pound first-place match, Morisette dominated Tanner Sturgeon (Nebraska-Kearney) to the tune of a 15-5 major decision for the Jacks’ first title of the day.
Hable opened his day in the semifinals after a first-round bye and dominated the field for his title. Hable pinned Shawn Walmer (USAFA Prep) in less than one minute to advance to the finals. In the 184-pound first-place match, Hable wasted no time and pinned Matt Atwood (Bethany) in 1:44 for SDSU’s second title at the open.
In addition to Morisette and Hable, three other SDSU wrestlers placed.
Will James rebounded from a first-round, 8-6 loss to finish fourth at 141 pounds. James posted three-straight wins, paired with a medical forfeit, to place. James defeated Klay Kasik (Nebraska-Kearney) by 8-6 decision, Cameron Mettenbrink (Hastings) by pin and avenged his first-round loss to Steven Gutschenritter (Buenva Vista) by 7-0 decision. In the third-place match, James wrestled hard, but was pinned in the third period.
Ben Schwery opened the day with two pins at 165, first versus Jayson Holechek (Midland) and next versus Travis Leiskau (Nebraska-Kearney). In the semifinal, Schwery dropped a 9-4 decision, but rebounded in the wrestleback semifinals with his third pin of the day, once again versus Holechek. In the third-place match, Leiskau avenged his quarterfinal loss and pushed Schwery to fourth by 10-4 decision.
Hunter Weddington, who wrestled in the same weight class as SDSU champion Hable, finished fourth, as well. Weddington dropped the quarterfinal match in tie breaker – 2, but came back with two wins in the consolation bracket to advance to the third-place match. Weddington won by third-period pin versus Tom Baron Von Vietinghoff-Scheel (USAFA Prep) and 4-1 decision versus Shawn Walmer (USAFA Prep). Samuel Tilley (Jamestown) pinned Weddington in the third-place match.
