Bernardo Silva tripped Rashford in the area, before the United striker sent Ederson the wrong way to open the scoring in the 23rd minute.
Martial made it 2-0 on the half-hour mark with a low, left-footed shot which crept in off the post.
City had a penalty appeal – for an apparent Fred handball – waved away at the end of the first half and United went into the break 2-0 up.
United midfielder Fred appeared to be struck by an object thrown from the Manchester City section of supporters as he lined up to take a corner in the 67th minute.
