SOUTHINGTON, CT — The Southington High School roof project will be done on time, according to the building committee in charge of the multi-million-dollar endeavor.
The Southington High School Partial Roof Replacement Building Committee met briefly last week and it was revealed the project will be done well in time for the first day of school, which is Thursday, Aug. 29.
According to a committee report, SHS’s freshman wing had its roof finished in the first two weeks after school broke for the summer last month.
Meanwhile, the contractor was expected to have completed the main building’s north half last week, with the whole project done by the first day of school.
Once the roof is replaced, school officials are planning to install solar panels to help power the school, with engineers working on where to best place those panels, according to the committee.

News of the roof project expected to be done on time comes a few months after town leaders revealed it was also coming in way, way under budget.
In November 2022, voters said “yes” to spending nearly $7 million for the roof project, but in December 2023, it was learned the cost to fix the roof would be about $2.1 million.
School officials have said the roof project is necessary given the amount of wear-and-tear on SHS, with this affected area being a piece of SHS roof slated for replacement following a 2019 overhaul.
