SCSU Wrestling Brings Home Win Over #6 Upper Iowa
Fayette, Iowa – In a battle of two of the nation’s top NCAA Division II wrestling programs, the #1 ranked St. Cloud State University Huskies (20-0, 7-0 NSIC) scored a 20-14 victory at #6 Upper Iowa University (10-4, 6-2 NSIC) on Sunday, Feb. 10.
The victory helped the Huskies maintain their hold on first place in the 2012-13 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference standings and SCSU has the opportunity to win the title outright on Thursday, Feb. 14 when the Huskies host Minnesota State University at 7 p.m. in Halenbeck Hall.
The Mavericks currently own a 9-2, 6-0 NSIC record this season and are ranked 10th in Division II. Tickets for the match can be purchased at the gate or by visiting www.scsutickets.com. At Fayette on Feb. 10, the Huskies and Peacocks squared off in closely contested match.
SCSU gained points at 125-pounds with a 4-2 victory by #4 Eric Forde over UIU’s Chris Palus. In one of the spotlight matches of the day, Upper Iowa’s Trevor Franklin posted an 8-3 win over SCSU’s Andrew Pokorny. In the latest NCAA rankings, Pokorny was ranked 1 in the nation and Franklin was ranked 2 in the nation at 133-pounds.
SCSU returned to the win column at 141-pounds with a crucial major decision win by Matt Nelson over Matt Palus. Senior Jacob D. Horn added a 7-2 win for the Huskies at 149-pounds against UIU’s Jordan Rinken.
The Huskies padded their lead at 157-pounds with a 4-2 decision victory by #8 Clint Poster over Bryce Lumzy. In action at 165-pounds, UIU’s #4 Wade Gobin majored Gabe Fogarty by a 11-3 tally and Blake Sorensen of UIU defeated Kurt Salmen 3-1 at 174-pounds.
SCSU’s #1 Shamus O’Grady contributed extra points at 184-pounds with a 13-1 major decision victory over Upper Iowa’s Brock Gobin.
At 197-pounds, Mitch Schultz (who is ranked #5 at 184) scored a major win over SCSU’s Mic Berg by a 10-0 tally. The day was capped at 285-pounds, as #2 ranked Jacob Kahnke won a 3-1 decision in sudden death against UIU’s Carl Broghammer. Of note, Broghammer is the nation’s #1 ranked DII wrestler at 197-pounds.
Kahnke’s victory provided the Huskies with the points needed to gain the dual match victory, which is SCSU’s 46th consecutive dual match win.
