QUEENS, NY — Starbucks workers in Sunnyside filed a petition for a union election earlier this month, hoping to join Starbucks Workers United.
The 46-09 Queens Blvd location filed its petition with the National Labor Relations Board on Dec. 5. and are seeking to join more than 520 locations across the country where baristas are working together to win workplace protections, including protections on core issues like respect, living wages, racial and gender equity, and fair scheduling, union official told Patch.
The Sunnyside location joined more than 10 other stores on the petition.
“We’re excited to join other Starbucks workers across the country in the union, having seen how impactful the movement has been. It’s only right that we keep up the fight until all workers get the respect that they deserve,” Ann Schilling, a partner of 3 years, told Patch.

Starbucks Locations Unionizing Throughout The City
In October, the Park Slope Starbucks — located at 166 7th Ave. — voted to join Starbucks Workers United in a final vote of 7-2, Patch previously reported.
“The partners at my store are committed to making Starbucks a great place for our community and for each other, and with that goal in mind, we are so excited to have won our union election,” barista Orion Booth, who has worked at the Park Slope Starbucks for five years, said.
In May, the Hoyt-Schermerhorn location filed its petition to unionize.
Workers told Patch they had been taken advantage of, expected to provide consistent experiences to customers while having to deal with lack of management support on shifts and shortages on products.
