GUILFORD, CT — T.J. Maxx, the discount department store chain that offers brand-name clothing, shoes, home decor, handbags and more, is planning to open a new store in Guilford, the company confirmed with Patch Friday.
A spokesperson said it’s anticipated the new location will open in late 2025 at 1919 Boston Post Road within Guilford Commons.
SITE Centers, the retail real estate management firm that owns Guilford Commons at 1919 Boston Post Road, lists T.J. Maxx as a featured retailer in the shopping center in unit No. 310, the 21,900-square-foot space formerly occpied by Bed Bath & Beyond which closed in 2023.
Other tenants at Guilford Commons include DSW, F45 Training, Ivy Rehab, Mattress Firm, Michaels, Mooyah Burgers & Fries, Panera Bread, Petco, Pure Barre, Spavia, The Fresh Market, T-Mobile, Ulta and Verizon Wireless.
Patch has reached out to SITE Centers for more information.
The news comes seven months after T.J. Maxx scrapped plans to move into the former Walmart on Boston Post Road in Guilford. Target is now planning to move into that space.
Guilford Commons is getting quite a boost from national retailers lately. It was announced last November that Old Navy would open a store in the shopping center.
First Selectman Matt Hoey told Patch Friday that T.J. Maxx presents “a wonderful opportunity” for Guilford residents and surrounding communities.
“We were disappointed that T.J. Maxx had decided not to move into the old Walmart facility, but the best of all worlds I think has happened here with Target taking the space T.J. Maxx was potentially going to take, and now T.J. Maxx winds up in Guilford anyway,” Hoey said.
“In terms of what this will mean for the community, it’s just access to national brands, quality items, in our own community, which has a corellating benefit of people now don’t have to get in their cars and drive 5 or 10 miles and burn fossil fuel, put wear and tear on their vehicles, at least those from Guilf ord,” Hoey added.
The nearest T.J. Maxx stores to Guilford are currently in Clinton, East Haven and North Haven.
