France met the powerful team of Serbia, but with a far more convincing performance, TeamYavbou managed to claim the victory and book the next flight to Sofia for the semifinals: 3:1 (25-22, 25-23, 14-25, 25-20) So far, France have never won the gold medal, instead, they claimed four silver medals (1948, 1987, 2003, 2009) and two bronze medals (1951, 1985).
Les Bleus managed to impose the pace of the game and dominated Serbia throughout the first two sets. An unstoppable Antonin Rouzier on the French side topped the scorer boards with 20 p, while Stankovic was the most important player for Nikola Grbic’s team. Despite the lost third set, Rouzier’s performance in attack (50%) and block highlights the amazing teamwork on the French side. Therefore, Team Yavbou writes down a little bit of history and the entire France is seduced.
It surely hasn’t happened once, but it is definitely a dishonor brought to this amazing generation of French volleyball players, that there are people who would confuse a sports competition with reasons to cast racist insults. Fed up with such insults and tabloid rumours, French star and the protagonist of probably the most beautiful defense action of the game, Earvin Ngapeth decided to post on his personal wall a couple of slanderous messages received right after the victory against Serbia. The French outside hitter claims he has never denied his Cameroun origins, neither his pride and gratefulness to play for the French national team. It is a pity the player cannot actually enjoy the huge victory tonight shadowed by racist aggressions. Earvin concludes his message: “I would like to remind you all that racism actually exists and I am one of those African mulatto players fighting against it till my last breath”.
