EVANSTON, Ill. – North Dakota State senior 165-pound wrestler Steven Monk advanced to the semifinals of the prestigious Midlands Championships for the second consecutive year on Sunday, going 3-0 inside Welsh-Ryan Arena at Northwestern University.
Sophomore Hayden Zillmer (174 pounds) and junior Kurtis Julson (184 pounds) remain alive in the consolation brackets for NDSU. Zillmer won his first two matches before falling in the quarterfinals, while Julson posted a 3-1 record on the day.
The top-seeded and fifth-ranked Monk won each of his first two matches by fall in the first period, pinning Ben Haas of Lehigh in 2:37 and Connor McMahon of SIU-Edwardsville in 2:54. Monk earned a 1-0 decision over No. 9-seeded Josh Houldsworth of Columbia in the quarterfinals.
Monk will meet fifth-seeded Cooper Moore of Northern Iowa in the semifinals on Monday. The two wrestlers have split a pair of decisions already this season. No. 2-seeded and No. 4-ranked Nick Moore of Iowa will face Michigan’s Taylor Massa in the other 165-pound semifinal.
Julson posted a 13-3 major decision of 10th-seeded Lucas Sheridan of Indiana in his final match on Sunday. Zillmer earned two decisions as the No. 2 seed at 174 pounds before losing by fall to Brock Gutches of Southern Oregon in the quarterfinals.
NDSU is in 14th place in the team standings with 23 points after the first day. The action continues Monday, Dec. 30, with the third session, semifinals, consolation matches and seventh-place matches at noon.
The Midlands Championships final sessions will air live on Big Ten Network at 8 p.m. (CT) on Monday.
