Jason Cundy believes Tottenham Hotspur are weaker if Heung-min Son does not play.
The former Chelsea midfielder watched the South Korea international terrorise the Red Star Belgrade defence on Saturday night as Spurs revitalised their season with a 5-0 Champions League demolition.
It has been a horrible start to the campaign for Mauricio Pochettino’s men, who had only won three games before this, but they put all their problems behind them in a pulsating display in Group B.
Harry Kane and Son both scored twice while Erik Lamela had a red letter day on his 200th appearance for the club, adding a second-half goal to his two assists.
Pochettino, who has admitted his job could be on the line if their slump continues, will hope this can be the start of a resurgence, though that will be put to the immediate test in their next game when they visit Liverpool in the Premier League.
It has to be said that Red Star, who somehow were supported by more than 200 fans despite a ban by UEFA, were not up to much, but Spurs were simply too hot to handle and produced a result that went some way to righting the wrongs of that 7-2 humiliation at the hands of Bayern Munich last time out.
Son, who scored in that game as well, looked simply unstoppable on Tuesday evening and will hope to replicate his European form at domestic level.
And, as Cundy explained on the Sports Bar, Poch needs his star man to shine in order to halt the Premier League slump the north London outfit are experiencing.
“He’s an unsung hero,” Cundy said. “But Spurs fans won’t feel that.
“I mean, I think maybe he is probably the most underrated player. When I say underrated, I mean we don’t talk about him enough.
'Have you taken stupid pills' – Jason Cundy can't believe 'deluded' Spurs caller
“And I know Spurs fans love him, they are a better team when he is in it – he didn’t start against Watford at the weekend because of course he was on international duty.
“He makes them tick; incredibly quick, very composed in front of goal and there’s not a lot in his game that you need to make it to the very top.”
