ESSEX COUNTY, NJ — Never underestimate the healing ability of a good snack.
A group of refugees from Ukraine recently got a little taste of home through a new partnership between a nonprofit and a business in Essex County.
Roseland-based Universal Yums has generated some online buzz among foodies with their whimsical subscription boxes, which feature treats native to a different country every month. But during an event held last week in partnership with Hope for Ukraine, the company got a chance to put the power of snacking to work in a different way.
Several refugee families gathered at St. Mary of Zyrovicy Church in Highland Park, where they received a supply of goodies from their home country. It was a small-but-appreciated gesture, according to Hope for Ukraine, which has been coordinating deliveries of much-needed supplies there since the 2022 invasion.
The latest effort to ease the suffering of the Russia-Ukraine war is also taking place on the financial front, according to a news release from Hope for Ukraine:

“Universal Yums will donate $2 from each subscription [in March] to support 300 refugee families in the U.S., providing them with snack boxes. These families, who have arrived after the start of the war, deeply appreciate the support extended by Hope for Ukraine and Universal Yums customers who took part in sponsoring these boxes by donating toward this initiative. Additionally, for every new subscription in March, Universal Yums will donate 100 boxes to families across the United States. In total, this initiative will benefit 300 families nationwide.”
