PEEKSKILL, NY — The day before Thanksgiving couldn’t have been worse timing for a water main break in Peekskill.
But water crews responded quickly and are working on the problem, according to city officials.
Peekskill City Manager Matthew Alexander said that a 16-inch main on Railroad Avenue broke early Wednesday morning.
“This large-sized main and location are a deadly combination for the city because it draws the water down at an extremely fast rate and causes water shutoffs for most of the city,” he told Patch.
Alexander said the Water Department came in early and isolated the broken section so that city residents are getting water from smaller pipes: 12-, 8- and 6-inch mains.
That means there will be lower water pressure, he said.
The utility companies have come in and identified the damaged area, and the Water Department workers are replacing the broken section.
“There may be slight disruptions in service today while they fix the break,” Alexander said.
He said the work the Water Department has accomplished over the past few years in valve installations has greatly helped in this particular instance because they allow the city to confine the problem to a small radius.
