According to a report from PW Torch's Wade Keller, there is belief in WWE that after Edge's contract expires in late-September, he will be heading to AEW.
The impetus for the move, according to Keller, is that WWE "declined to meet Edge's request" for what it would take to have him sign a potential new deal. It's unclear what the specifics of his requests were.
Dave Meltzer has confirmed the accuracy of the report as well.
"PWTorch has learned that Copeland presented to WWE what it would take to retain his services, but WWE declined to meet his request. This has sparked a belief within WWE that he is probably headed to AEW and knew at that time what AEW could offer him (based, perhaps, on conversations with other wrestlers of his star power about AEW pay)."
Edge (Adam Copeland) wrestled what he said was his last match in Toronto, Canada, on last Friday's SmackDown as he was celebrating the 25th anniversary of his WWE debut. He then told a Toronto radio show that his bout with Sheamus was the last one on his contract and added that his contract expires at the end of September.
When asked about the idea of retirement, the 49-year-old said he's thought about it but hasn't come to any conclusions as he is "torn" about what to do.
"Because I don't want to do this to the point where I don't feel like I'm able to have the output that I want. Because only I know how I feel when I'm deep into a match and go, 'Oof, man, okay, didn't do enough cardio' or 'Man, I did all that cardio and I'm still feeling this way.' That's why I really want to collect myself after this thing. Take just a big ol' deep breath and just decide what that is. My contract is up at the end of September. This is my last contracted match. So I have a lot of decisions to make. But I can't do it now. I think I almost got to see how Friday goes in a weird way. I know that's not a clear answer, but I don't have it yet."
Edge's longtime tag team partner in WWE, Christian Cage, signed with AEW in March 2021.
