The show opens up with a recap of Braun Strowman tossing SmackDown Commissioner Shane McMahon through a table during last Friday’s Greatest Royal Rumble Event in Saudi Arabia. We head backstage to SmackDown General Manager Paige watching what went down. Paige says that Shane will not be here tonight. Paige also talks about the match between Shinsuke Nakamura and WWE Champion AJ Styles at Greatest Royal Rumble and announces that their match at Backlash on Sunday will now be a No DQ Match so that we will have a clear winner.
We are live from the Bell Centre in Montreal, Quebec, Canada as Tom Phillips welcomes us to the show. He is joined by Corey Graves and Byron Saxton.
We head right to the ring and The Miz makes his way down to the ring for another edition of MizTV. The fans start chanting for Maryse but Miz says that he took her home to Hollywood.
The Miz starts by saying that Daniel Bryan has been banned from MizTV due to last week’s no-show. The Miz sends a warning to WWE Intercontinental Champion Seth Rollins ahead of their title match at Backlash on Sunday. The Miz rants about the title and how he elevated the title and the fans cheer. The Miz then says that the fans will see an A-Lister as champion this Sunday. He gets back to MizTV and introduces tonight’s guest. WWE United States Champion Jeff Hardy makes his way down to the ring.
They take a few shots at each other to start, including Jeff Hardy taunting The Miz for losing to Seth Rollins. The Miz accuses Jeff hardy of being too arrogant. The Miz then shows us how Jeff Hardy came to SmackDown Live a few weeks ago and interacted with Randy Orton. The Miz reveals that we have another guest for tonight and Randy Orton makes his way to the ring next. Orton says that he doesn’t care that The Miz mentioned how he interrupted The Miz’s intro. The Miz tries to stir up stuff between Orton and Hardy. Orton then says that he is not mad at Jeff and he doesn’t see what the big deal is. Orton also says that Jeff took advantage of a situation and Orton did the same to him last week. Orton also says that he and Jeff are cool as far as he’s concerned. The Miz keeps trying to stir up stuff against Orton and Hardy and get Orton to strike Hardy with the RKO. Orton warns The Miz and says that no one tells him when to strike. Orton then says that he will be taking his title back at Backlash. Hardy then tells Orton that he can try. The Miz taunts them for having a mutual agreement and says that maybe they should hug. The music hits and Shelton Benjamin makes his way down to the ring.
Shelton starts by saying that Orton can’t try and doesn’t deserve to try. He also doesn’t deserve a damn thing. The fans boo Shelton. Shelton then says that he defeated Orton in the middle of the ring last week so if anybody deserves a title shot, it’s him. The fans give Shelton the “what?!” treatment. Orton kicks Shelton on the apron and goes for the draping DDT but here comes The Miz. Jeff takes The Miz to the corner and hits a Whisper in the Wind. Orton and Hardy stand tall as Shelton looks on from the ramp. The Miz scrambles to the floor as MizTV has been canceled. We go to a commercial break with Hardy’s theme music playing.
Back from the commercial break and the tag team match between The United States Champion Jeff Hardy & Randy Orton vs. The Miz & Shelton Benjamin is in progress.
United States Champion Jeff Hardy & Randy Orton vs. The Miz & Shelton Benjamin: Orton and Shelton start off. Orton and Jeff trade tags now to keep control of Shelton, but Orton misses an RKO and Shelton capitalizes. The Miz tags in now and continues the offense on Orton. Jeff gets the tag and unloads on Miz with strikes for a two count. The Miz blocks a Twist of Fate, and Jeff knocks Shelton off the apron in the process. Jeff blocks a Skull Crushing Finale, and then Shelton tags back in. Jeff catches Shelton in the Twist of Fate, and then he goes up top for the Swanton, but Miz grabs his leg. Jeff kicks Miz away, and then Shelton runs up the turnbuckle and knees Jeff in the head, then Jeff gets knocked down. The Miz takes control of Hardy on the mat now and then plants him with a DDT for a two count. Shelton comes in and Jeff stuns him with a jawbreaker, then Miz quickly tags back in and stops Jeff from tagging in Orton. Miz works over Jeff in the corner and then taunts the crowd. Miz charges at Jeff, but Jeff gets up and clotheslines The Miz down. Orton and Shelton get the tags, and Orton cleans house. Orton slams Shelton down, then throws Miz outside and slams him on the announce table. Orton goes back in and dropkicks Shelton down, then hits a double draping DDT on Shelton and Miz. Orton hits the RKO on Shelton, then tags in Jeff who hits the Swanton Bomb on Benjamin for the three count. Winners: United States Champion Jeff Hardy & Randy Orton
After the match, Hardy’s music hits as he gets back to his feet. Orton immediately drops Hardy with the RKO. Orton stands tall as his music hits now.
We head backstage where Renee Young is interviewing The IIconics. Carmella was supposed to be part of the interview but she is not there. Peyton Royce and Billie Kay mock Renee Young and the people of Canada. They bring up the Asuka and Becky Lynch match from last week, then tell Renee Young to leave after she tries to speak up about what happened. They introduce Carmella next and here comes the SmackDown Women’s Champion. She thanks them for the introduction and says that she is so excited to team with them tonight. She goes on and says that she is going to beat Charlotte Flair again at Backlash on Sunday. Carmella then says that they are pretty much invincible together, so they should go out there tonight and show everyone why Mella Is Money. And why the future is IIconic.
Commentary reminds us that tonight Shinsuke Nakamura demands an apology from WWE Champion AJ Styles before heading back to a commercial break.
Back from the commercial break and Tom Phillips says that Daniel Bryan is currently unable to perform due to doctors not clearing him because they are concerned that he might develop a bad chest infection. We see a video of Bryan speaking after Friday’s 50-Man Greatest Royal Rumble Match in Saudi Arabia. Graves says that the match between Daniel Bryan and Big Cass is still on for Backlash and nothing will keep him from a SmackDown ring.
We head backstage where we see The Bar walking around when they roll up on The New Day. The New Day taunts them for losing the RAW Tag Team Titles at Friday’s Greatest Royal Rumble Event. The Bar says that they have always wanted to be on SmackDown and now that they are here, they will be able to run The New Day down. They go on and The Bar is given a platter of pancakes. They wonder if laxative were put in it. Cesaro tosses the pancakes and The New Day is angry. Sheamus proposes a real welcoming present, which is a match for later on tonight. Big E steps up in his face and says that he’s got it. Sheamus steps to Xavier Woods and says that this is who he wants. Woods says that Sheamus’ soul belongs to him tonight as they face off.
We head to another area backstage where we see Rusev and Aiden English talking. We hear fans chanting “Rusev Day” in the arena. English is about to reveal new lyrics for a song when Lana walks in. Fans pop big for Lana, who is wearing a Rusev Day t-shirt. Rusev compliments her on the shirt. Lana starts by saying that Rusev Day is bigger than ever and he had a huge Casket Match against The Undertaker at Friday’s Greatest Royal Rumble Event. Lana then says that Rusev did good but something is holding him back. Rusev wonders what could possibly be holding him back as he has a holiday in his name every day. English heads off as Lana and Rusev look at each other.
We head back to the ring and Big Cass makes his way down to the ring. Graves says that Cass wasn’t scheduled to come out before heading back to a commercial break.
Back from the commercial break and Big Cass is in the ring with mic in hand.
Cass reminds everyone that he’s from New York City. The fans boo. He talks about people from New York City having a stigma of not liking people from other cities and thinking they are better than those people from other cities. Cass starts off by saying that this is all true. Fans give him heat as he rants about knowing he’s better than everybody, including Daniel Bryan. Cass goes on about Bryan’s size, saying that the fans in the crowd has the same size as Daniel Bryan does. Cass then says that the real size of a WWE Superstar is 7 feet tall. Cass also says that Bryan is small and weak, and when they face off at Backlash we won’t get a 5 star match, we will get a 5 second match. Cass then says that he doesn’t need a wrist lock, an arm bar or any of that, he doesn’t even need time to prepare. Why wait until Backlash? Cass calls Bryan to come down to the ring right now to get his teeth kicked out. Fans chant “yes!” as Cass waits. The music hits and out comes a midget dressed as Daniel Bryan. The midget does the “yes!” chant and heads to the ring.
Cass then says that Bryan looks a bit taller tonight and wonders if he has lifts in his shoes. Cass makes more jokes about the midget’s size. The midget Bryan kicks Cass in the leg and Cass continues joking about his size. The midget kicks Cass again. They continue with this back & forth. Cass calls for the midget to take a bow for all his fans in Montreal. Cass then says that the midget is available for bookings. Cass sets the mic down and stares the midget down as he waves out to the crowd. He turns around and Cass floors him with a big boot. Cass jumps on the little guy and pounds on him as fans boo. Cass stands tall with a boot on the midget’s chest. Fans chant “asshole” now as a group of referees come down to get Cass away from the little guy. Fans boo as Cass leaves the ring.
Commentary reminds us that Asuka teams up with Becky Lynch and Charlotte Flair later on tonight. Commentary also reminds us that Shinsuke Nakamura demands an apology from the WWE Champion later on tonight. On that note, we go back to a commercial break.
Back from the commercial break and we see Renee Young in the ring. She introduces her guest WWE Champion AJ Styles. AJ Styles makes his way down to the ring. Renee Young goes to speak but fans start chanting AJ’s name.
Renee asks AJ about the No DQ stipulation for Sunday’s Backlash match against Shinsuke Nakamura as the chants continue. AJ calls Nakamura a con artist and a cheap skate. AJ then says that Nakamura can play his games because that’s the benefit of a No DQ Match. AJ also says that he’s out here trying to defend his gold when it seems like Nakamura is worried about the wrong jewels, after all the recent low blows. Renee brings up what happened at the Greatest Royal Rumble Event and how Nakamura now wants an apology. Renee asks if AJ will be able to do that and he brushes it off. AJ says that he should have left Nakamura sucking sand in the Arabian Desert. AJ also says that Nakamura ruined his WrestleMania 34 Match and the AJ Styles vs. Daniel Bryan Match for the WWE Universe and tried to take out his friend last week. AJ then says that Nakamura is a coward that attacks from behind and below the belt but you can throw those rules out the window this Sunday. AJ then says that he can break rules too. AJ goes on and says that we are going to find pieces of Nakamura all over the place and the look we will see on his face will be the look of torture, courtesy of The Phenomenal One. Renee asks about the apology again. AJ says that if Nakamura wants an apology he should come out. The music hits but it’s Samoa Joe who comes out.
Joe gets a pop as some fans chant his name. He takes the mic while on the ramp. Joe says that AJ is out here making a spectacle of himself, so filled with rage and anger that he has lost focused of what is really dangerous around him. Joe says that AJ isn’t focused on the right match at all, he should be focused on the one where Joe’s hand is raised in victory as he once again proves that Roman Reigns is a failure at Backlash. Fans pop as Joe runs Reigns down and talks about the finish to the match at Greatest Royal Rumble with WWE Universal Champion Brock Lesnar. Joe then says that Lesnar is the rightful champion and Reigns failed. Joe then says that this brings him to AJ, who needs to make peace with a destiny that is coming his way. Joe then says that he will put Reigns to sleep at Backlash and then he’s coming for AJ or Nakamura to beat them down and take the WWE Title. Believe that. Joe’s music hits as AJ looks on from the ring. The music of Nakamura hits. Joe turns and faces the entrance, ready to brawl with Nakamura. Nakamura hits the ring from behind instead, laying AJ out with another low blow. Nakamura gets down and taunts AJ in his face. Fans loudly chant for Nakamura as he waits for AJ to recover. Nakamura looks to hit the Kinshasa on AJ but he puts the brakes on and runs into the opposite corner instead, taunting AJ and letting him know that he’s in control. Nakamura straightens up and drops AJ with the Kinshasa after all. Nakamura continues to taunt AJ as some fans boo. Nakamura stands tall over AJ and poses as his music hits. Nakamura grabs the WWE Title and raises it over AJ. Nakamura drops the title on AJ and leaves.
We head backstage where we see that Becky Lynch is upset. She starts by saying that she is upset with herself as she talks to Asuka about last week’s loss, taking the blame for Asuka’s first defeat. Asuka tells her to forget last week because tonight they will hit back three times harder. Charlotte Flair is also there. Flair says that Carmella and The IIconics think they’re invincible but they’re just annoying and have lost their minds. Flair then says that she will win her title back on Sunday but tonight she will teach Carmella about respect. Asuka gets fired up and heads out. Flair and Becky sip some tea to end the segment.
Commentary reminds us that Sheamus will face Xavier Woods later on tonight. We go back to a commercial break.
Back from the commercial break and The Bar is already in the ring waiting for The New Day. The New Day makes their way down to the ring next and we have a match between Sheamus and Xavier Woods.
Xavier Woods vs. Sheamus: The opening bell sounds and Sheamus takes control early on. He drops Woods and beats on him in the corner. Woods ducks a clothesline and kicks out Sheamus’ knee. Woods hits a rolling elbow and a dropkick, and Sheamus falls to the outside. Woods hits a suicide dive on Sheamus, then takes him back in the ring. Cesaro distracts Woods by taunting him with some pancakes, and Sheamus takes advantage with a big knee to Woods. Sheamus pummels on Woods as fans chant “you look stupid” at him. Sheamus follows up with an Irish Curse backbreaker, and continues to control the pace of the match. Woods starts firing back with strikes and a leg drop for a two count. They go back and forth until Woods hits a Shining Wizard for another two count. Woods goes up top, but Cesaro distracts him. Big E comes over and brawls with Cesaro on the floor, and the distraction leads to Woods rolling up Sheamus for the three count. Winner: Xavier Woods
After the match, The New Day celebrates as The Bar regroups in the ring.
We see a video from last week where Mandy Rose and Sonya Deville were dissing Becky Lynch as Lynch was looking on. We see Paige in her office, watching what went down last week. The Absolution members walk in and they all hug. They congratulate her on being General Manager and say that this is awesome. They want to get straight to the point as they say that they know why she called them to her office. Mandy thinks that Paige is giving her a title shot but Paige says that she has to earn it if she wants it, like Paige did. Paige announces Mandy Rose vs. Becky Lynch for next week’s show. Mandy asks if Paige can give them some special treatment. Deville agrees because they’re in Absolution together. Paige then says that Absolution is dead. We go to a commercial break as tension seems to fill the air.
Back from the commercial break and we get a promo from Zelina Vega. We see that Andrade “Cien” Almas is with her. Vega says that everyone wants to know when Almas is coming to SmackDown but we only get to know what she wants us to know. Vega then says that as his business manager she promises that SmackDown will change very soon. Almas hypes the arrival of El Idolo before jumping into an SUV waiting for him as we also see Vega in the same SUV.
Commentary hypes up Sunday’s WWE Backlash PPV as well as the WWE Network.
We head back to the ring for tonight’s main event.
Asuka, Charlotte Flair & Becky Lynch vs. SmackDown Women’s Champion Carmella & The IIconics (Billie Kay & Peyton Royce): The opening bell sounds and Charlotte and Carmella start off. Carmella quickly tags in Royce before things get physical, and Flair tags in Becky. Becky takes Royce down and they go back and forth. Billie hits a cheap shot on Becky from the apron, which Peyton capitalizes on with more strikes. Asuka tags in and taunts Billie before beating on her. Billie slaps Asuka across the face, and Asuka smiles and unloads with a series of strikes. Asuka hits the hip attack, then tags in Flair for the double team. Flair continues the offense until Billie slams her down by the hair, then tags in Carmella. Charlotte blocks a superkick, and takes Carmella down for the Figure Eight. Carmella escapes and rolls outside with the IIconics, and Charlotte launches herself outside with a suicide dive on them. All hell breaks loose now between the competitors as the referee tries to restore order. It comes down to Becky and Carmella in the ring, and Becky drops her. Becky looks for the tag, but Billie and Peyton pull Asuka off the apron, and Carmella stops Becky from tagging in Charlotte. Becky fights off Carmella and tags in Charlotte, who cleans house. Billie distracts Charlotte and Carmella slams Charlotte face-first into the turnbuckle as a result. The IIconics double team Flair now, then Carmella tags in and continues the beat-down on Charlotte. Charlotte starts fighting back and looks for a Figure Eight on Peyton, but Peyton escapes. Asuka tags in and unloads with strikes, then hits a flying kick to the face. Billie and Carmella get involved now, and Asuka knocks them both off the apron with a hip attack. Peyton rolls Asuka up from behind for a two count, then argues with the referee. Charlotte and Billie fight on the floor, while Peyton and Asuka continue to go at it in the ring. Asuka counters a move and locks in the Asuka Lock. Peyton taps out for the finish. Winners: Asuka, Charlotte Flair & Becky Lynch
After the match, Asuka’s music hits and the babyfaces stand tall together in the ring as we go to replays. Carmella sits on the ramp and clutches the title as she recovers. Flair exits the ring and looks on from the bottom of the ramp, motioning for the title around her waist. Carmella clutches the title and stares back at Flair as SmackDown goes off the air.
