The June 6th edition of WWE SmackDown airs live on the USA Network from the Blue Cross Arena in Rochester, New York featuring all the latest build to the upcoming Money in the Bank pay-per-view (PPV) scheduled for later this month in St. Louis.
Advertised for tonight: Shinsuke Nakamura vs. Kevin Owens, and more!
The show opens up with a video packaging reminding us of what lead to the creation of the first ever women’s Money in the Bank Ladder Match.
We are then welcomed to the show by Tom Philipps and he says history will be made in the first ever Women’s MITB Match and JBL adds that history was already made when the match was announced by Shane McMahon last week.
In the arena, Shane McMahon makes his entrance with all five competitors in the ladder match (and James Ellsworth) already in the ring. Shane welcomes everybody to the show and introduces the women one by one. We now have the women that will compete in the six-woman tag team match tonight, but first he wanted to do a reveal. He gets a drum roll and an item is lowered on a hook, it’s the Women’s Money in the Bank briefcase.
McMahon says the question is which woman will hold it in their clutches on June 18th. As we know, this match is dangerous and people leave a piece of themselves in the ring. But with great risk comes great reward, and the reward is a guaranteed SmackDown Women’s Championship title match any time, any place.
Ellsworth grabs the mic and interrupts Shane McMahon saying that there’s no need to man-splain what the briefcase means, because we already know what’s happening. Carmella says she’s gonna be the only chick left looking down from the top of the ladder at the end of the match. Charlotte Flair tells her to pipe down, because she has something to say.
Flair thanks Shane on behalf of her four opponents, for allowing them the opportunity to brush up against greatness, and she’s more genetically superior than all of them combined, and she’s gonna add this to her legacy. Natalya tells Charlotte so stop ripping off her father and that she is sick of the “wooo” and she’s not gonna let her get anywhere near that contract because she is the best there is the best there was and the best there ever will be.
Becky Lynch says the only thing Nattie is best at is ripping off Uncle Bret, while she’s best at ripping off arms, and that’s how she’s gonna become the first Ms. Money in the Bank. Tamina says all they do is talk, but in St. Louis, she’s gonna shut all of them up.
The women’s champion Naomi then makes her way to the ring. She says that as much as she loves being champion, she’d love to be in this match, because it’s gonna be lit. The match will be historic, but whoever wins the contract has to face her, and she’s ready, and she’ll stay ready.
Lana interrupts and makes her way to the ring. Shane greets her and says this is the land of opportunity but this isn’t the right time and it’s not working for him right now. She then tells says that she promises what works for her, she’ll make work for him. Naomi can’t compete in this match, but she can, Naomi then laughs out loud.
Lana asks her what’s funny and she says Bugs Bunny and you before continuing, asking if she’s serious. She hasn’t even had a singles match. Who has she ever beat? Naomi sings the Jeopardy theme and Lana says she can beat Naomi. Shane tells her she has to earn a title match and Lana sputters and stamps her feet before leaving.
Shane says it’s time to get ready for the match, which is up next, so let’s get the show going, and then we go to a break.
Back from commercial break and we begin the match.
Natalya, Carmella & Tamina def. Naomi, Becky Lynch & Charlotte: Charlotte starts things off against Natalya and lays into her with chops to the chest. Charlotte hits a knee drop then Becky tags in. Carmella tags in and Becky rolls Carmella up in a series of pin attempts. Becky hits a flying forearm on Carmella for a two count. Carmella throws Becky outside where Natalya hits Becky with a discus clothesline on the floor. Back in the ring, Natalya and Tamina take turns working over Becky. Naomi and Carmella get the tags and Naomi drops Carmella with a series of kicks. Tamina comes in and Naomi hits a kick to the head, but Tamina throws her into the corner. Naomi hits another kick and a springboard cross body for a two count. Lana comes back down the ramp and trips Naomi from ringside, which leads to Tamina hitting a superkick for the win.
Shane is walking backstage on his phone when he runs into the Andre the Giant Memorial Battle Royal in Memory of Andre the Giant Trophy. And Mojo Rawley is also there. He says that was the greatest moment of his life and he thought it’d springboard his career, but fact is he’s been a ghost, riding the bench for two months.
But SmackDown is the land of opportunity, and he doesn’t want a favor, just a chance. He knows he was left out of Money in the Bank for a reason, and if that was to challenge him or motivate him, then he’ll step up, but if it’s because he was forgotten, he wants to remind Shane that only one man has beaten WWE Champion Jinder Mahal and that’s him.
Shane says there’s a lot of talent who want to step up, Tye Dillinger, Luke Harper, and he’ll offer Mojo an opportunity. He has a chance to get into the Money in the Bank Ladder Match if he can beat his opponent tonight the WWE Champion Jinder Mahal. Mojo is excited and thanks Shane for the opportunity.
Commentary hypes up for the Nakamura/Owens and Ziggler/Styles matches for tonight, and then we go to a commercial break.
AJ Styles def. Dolph Ziggler: Ziggler hits a big dropkick in the opening moments of this rematch from last week for a two count. Ziggler and Styles trade right hands in the middle of the ring until AJ drops Dolph with a clothesline. Ziggler rolls up AJ and puts his feet on the ropes, but the referee breaks the pin. Ziggler hits the Fame-asser on AJ for a two count. Ziggler takes AJ up top for a superplex, but AJ gets out. AJ elbows Ziggler in the face and Ziggler comes back with another rollup pin attempt holding the ropes. AJ gets out and comes back with the Styles Clash for the win.
Commentary then says that up next is a new episode of Fashion Files.
Fandango rolls up shirtless but wearing a tie. He says he took the cologne to the boys in the lab but there’s no boys and no lab, so he tasted it himself. He doesn’t think that it is the Colons’ cologne, or anything to do or related to the Colon’s.
The New Day are navigating their ice cream cart down the hall when they step into Breezango’s office, which is in black and white for them as well. They don’t know where else to go and were hoping Breezango would help them out on a case. Breezango talks in their thoughts saying that they’d take it but New Day can’t hear their thoughts.
Big E says there’s something in it for them too, and they fish rompers out of Big E’s singlet for them. Fandango throws his down, upset at the fabric choice and he says that he may like dancing and he may like Dirty Dancing, but he’s not a dirty dancer and they don’t take bribes. Breeze then steps in and says that he’s in.
New Day want some intel on the Usos and Breezango hand them three boxes worth of files, including the Day One is H hoodie. They think that they’re on the case but New Day still can’t hear them and they leave, thanking Breezango.
Mojo Rawley makes his entrance, his match against WWE Champion Jinder Mahal will be after the break.
Jinder Mahal def. Mojo Rawley: This one is a non-title match. The Singh Brothers come out before Jinder to introduce the WWE Champion. Mojo starts off strong with a flying shoulder block that sends Jinder rolling outside. Back in the ring, Mojo hits another shoulder block, but then he’s distracted by the Singh Brothers at ringside. Jinder capitalizes on the distraction by booting Mojo in the face then dropping some knees on him. Mojo comes back with some right hands and a splash in the corner. Mojo gets Jinder in the Fireman’s Carry position, but Jinder rakes the eyes and throws Mojo in the corner. Jinder grabs Mojo from behind and hits the Cobra Clutch slam for the win.
After the match, Jinder gets on the mic after and demands silence. He reminds us that he is WWE Champion, he just dismantled the dreams of Mojo Rawley just like he’s going to dismantle the dreams of Randy Orton. His dream of regaining the WWE Championship in his hometown of St. Louis in the USA.
Randy Orton is sick and everyone who supports him is sick, but Mahal claims to be the antidote. Once he cures the WWE Universe, they’ll have no choice but to accept him as their Maharaja. And now he’ll speak to his people in his language of Punjabi.
Commentary reminds us of Nakamura vs. Owens tonight and we go to a video package highlighting WWE’s resident rockstar Shinsuke Nakamura.
The New Day is backstage getting ready to come out to the ring.
We go backstage where Randy Orton does an interview where he says he’s talked to his father, Ric Flair and Harley Race who all told him to let Jinder talk trash because actions speak louder than words. Orton says at Money In The Bank he won’t have to say a word but Jinder will hear him fine.
We go back to the arena where The New Day will go up against The Colons next.
The New Day def. The Colons: Xavier Woods and Big E are representing the New Day in this one. Primo starts off in control against Xavier, but when Epico tags in Xavier takes him back to the corner and Big E tags in. This leads to Big E and Xavier getting both Colons in abdominal stretches and spanking them in stereo. Xavier hits a missile dropkick off the top on Primo, then Big E and Epico tag in. Big E hits a series of belly to belly suplexes, followed up by a running splash. Xavier takes out Primo at ringside with a suicide dive, while Epico rolls up Big E from behind in the ring for a two count. Xavier tags in and they hit the Midnight Hour on Epico for the win.
After the match, The Usos come to the stage as New Day are celebrating their victory. The Usos say that they are really impressed today, or more like yesterday, because New Day are old news and the Usos have the tag division on lock. They welcome New Day once again to the Uso Penitentiary, and they say that they are not always serious and that they also have jokes in them as much as anybody does.
The Usos starts of with Kofi joking about his pigtails and crop top saying all he’s missing is a tutu. Then they move to Big E, saying if that is really his initials or his bra size? Then to Xavier, telling him to look up up then down down and they ask him what are those? But at Money in the Bank, it won’t be about jokes or laughter. It is not paranoia, it is the Usos.
Kevin Owens is taping his wrists up backstage and we go to a commercial break.
We go backstage where Sami Zayn does an interview. He says he’s been watching footage of all of his Money In the Bank opponents to prepare for the match. But for Nakamura it is different, he can’t seem to prepare for Nakamura even though what he does or what he watches. Zayn says he’s going to join the commentary team for Nakamura vs. Owens tonight for a closer look. Baron Corbin interrupts, beats down Zayn and tells him he doesn’t need to worry about Nakamura, he needs to worry about him. Corbin hits him with a ladder, then throws him into some more ladders. Corbin says he’ll be taking Zayn’s spot on commentary tonight.
We cut to Shane McMahon on the phone talking about what just happened when Naomi enters. She wants Lana at Money in the Bank. She says she can beat her, so let’s see if she can. McMahon says he has a lot on his plate but Naomi’s under no obligation to fight. Naomi says she really wants the fight and is willing to put the title on the line.
Shane asks if she’s sure, and she says she is, so he makes the match. Naomi goes to leave but comes back to tell Shane to tell Lana to invest in an ushanka, because she’s gonna get snatched bald.
Kevin Owens makes his entrance and we go to break.
Shinsuke Nakamura def. Kevin Owens: Baron Corbin is on commentary for this one. Nakamura starts off strong and sends Owens rolling to the outside. Owens pulls Nakamura outside and hits a fallaway slam into the fan barricade. Back in the ring, Owens follows up with strikes and a chin lock. Nakamura starts fighting back but Owens drops him with a DDT for a two count. Owens and Nakamura trade forearm shots until Nakamura drops him with a kick. Nakamura hits some more kicks and elbows to the face. Nakamura hits a splash in the corner then lays Owens across the ropes in the corner for a knee strike. Owens head-butts Nakamura then hits a running clothesline in the corner. Owens goes up for a superplex but Nakamura fights him off. Owens drops Nakamura into the bottom turnbuckle then hits the cannonball in the corner. Nakamura comes back with a spinning heel kick on Owens then a reverse exploder suplex. Nakamura hits the Kinshasa Knee Strike to Owens for the win.
After the match, Baron Corbin runs in and hits the End of Days on Nakamura. Corbin heads backstage as we see replays of the End of Days. Corbin looks on as Nakamura is still lying on his back as SmackDown goes off the air.
