– A video package of last week’s show aired, focussing on Shane McMahon trying to fire Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn, and Daniel Bryan’s “temporary solution” of putting them in a lumberjack match against the entire Smackdown roster.
IN-RING SEGMENT
Shane McMahon came out to kick off the show and got a cheap pop by putting over Lexington, Kentucky. He said he was very much looking forward to firing Owens and Zayn last week because they have no respect for authority or the fans, but instead trusted Daniel Bryan to do the right thing. Obviously that didn’t happen.
Smackdown GM Daniel Bryan came out to a tremendous reaction to plead his case. He said that after being fired once or twice in his career, he now believes in second chances. Bryan even said that Shane’s own temper has resulted in some very bad decisions in the past, so maybe in this case they should let it go. McMahon reminded everyone that KO beat the hell out of his father, and Sami interfered in their Hell in a Cell match, so he feels like his temper was pretty well justified in those instances.
Daniel tried to give them the benefit of the doubt as two talented wrestlers just trying to “grab the brass ring”, and told Shane that as general manager he refused to just be a “yes man” that did whatever he was told. The Commissioner agreed to that, but made a few changes to tonight’s main event. Not only was Sami Zayn barred from ringside as Kevin Owens faces “The Viper” Randy Orton, but that match will now be a No Disqualification match. The two shook hands, so at least for now it appears that the two Smackdown authority figures are back on the same page…
BACKSTAGE SEGMENT
After a commercial break, Sami Zayn and Kevin Owens found Daniel Bryan backstage and basically begged him to reconsider tonight’s main event. Owens called Randy Orton “completely insane” and Zayn said that no matter what happens tonight, it’s on Bryan’s hands now. The GM claimed that they weren’t the only ones trying to keep their job, and refused to budge.
THE NEW DAY vs. SHELTON BENJAMIN & CHAD GABLE
Smackdown Tag Team Champions Jimmy and Jey Uso were ringside for the match on commentary, and were given a huge plate of pancakes and maple syrup by Big E beforehand. Gable looked great at the start of the match, showing more of that mean streak with vicious suplexes and slams, frequently tagging in his partner to put the boots to Xavier Woods. They kept control through a commercial break with Benjamin driving his knees into their opponent over and over again. Gable even took a cheap shot knocking Kofi off the apron, really showing that he doesn’t care about the rules anymore.
After several minutes Woods connected with a beautiful missile dropkick from the top rope, sending Gable flying across the ring. He finally got the hot tag to Kofi Kingston who came in with dropkicks and flying crossbodies on everyone. Shelton rolled through a top rope crossbody and picked up a close two-count, but quickly got caught with the Boom Drop. Kingston lined up for Trouble in Paradise but Benjamin caught him, and they both went spilling to the floor. Woods saw his moment and dove over the ropes, taking all three guys out! They rolled Gable back into the ring, connected with the UpUpDownDown and got the three.
