NEWARK, NJ — Dozens of fathers and other positive male role models celebrated parenthood and guardianship in Newark on Tuesday at KIPP TEAM Academy’s annual Kings Recognize Kings Day.
Once a year, the academy invites male role models into the school building to line the hallways and cheer on their students. After a warm welcome, the male figures gather with students in the cafeteria to discuss the importance of student learning and the critical role that parents and similar figures play in a child’s life.
A record-breaking number of nearly 100 fathers and “father figures” attended this year’s event, administrators said.
Nikeya Stuart, school leader at KIPP TEAM Academy said part of the beauty of the annual celebration is that it isn’t only fathers who participate – it also includes students’ uncles, brothers, grandfathers and neighbors, all of whom want to show their solidarity.
Watch Stuart speak about the annual event in the video below.
