Sadio Mane is living the dreams of millions of young Africans, as per Reuters. The man hailed from a small village in Senegal and went on to play at the highest level in Europe.
Mane’s family did not want him to take up football and so he had to sneak away from Bambali to join an academy in Dakar.
Mane has played a role in Senegal to consecutive World Cups and win a maiden Africa Cup of Nations. With Liverpool he’s won the Champions League, Premier League and FA Cup. Now he is back on national duty for the FIFA World Cup in Qatar..
The 30-year-old is currently the African Footballer of the Year. Senegal take on Ecuador, Netherlands and Qatar in Group A.
Mane is known to be philanthropic.
“Why would I want 10 Ferraris, 20 diamond watches or two planes? What will these objects do for me and for the world?” he once said.
“I was hungry, and I had to work in the field; I survived hard times, played football barefooted, I did not have an education and many other things, but today with what I earn thanks to football, I can help my people,” he added.
The FIFA World Cup begins on November 20 and ends on December 18.
