VAR was the subject of MORE controversy on Saturday as Norwich striker Teemu Pukki was adjudged offside by the barest of margins.
During the first half of the Canaries’ clash against with Tottenham at Carrow Road, Pukki thought he had doubled his side’s lead after expertly converting home after receiving a long ball from out wide.
Unsurprisingly, Norwich fans and players began to celebrate after what they thought was a perfectly good and legal goal.
But as with many goals this season, their celebrations were cut short when VAR gave the decision in favour of the visitors.
Replays showed that of Pukki’s arm was millimetres ahead of Tottenham defender Jan Vertonghen.
The call had Spurs supporters breathing a huge sigh of relief, but it infuriated Norwich fans – as well as neutrals.
Match of the Day pundit Lineker slammed the technology, writing on social media: “Here we go again. More nonsense from VAR. Pukki goal ruled out when level. If you have to draw lines and dots and it’s still not clear one way or the other, then please stop undermining the on-field officials. Absurd.”
And it was not the first instance of VAR declaring a goal offside by a small margin in Saturday’s Premier League action.
Earlier in the day, Brighton’s Dan Burn had his first goal for the club ruled out by the technology for a similarly tight decision, while Crystal Palace’s Wilfried Zaha was also adjudged to be offside by millimetres in the lead up to a goal by Max Meyer.
Fortunately for the Seagulls it didn’t matter, as two fine goals from Alireza Jahanbakhsh and then Aaron Mooy sealed a 2-0 victory over Bournemouth.
However, Palace were left to rue the decision as Southampton fought back to claim a point at St Mary’s.
