Animal sacrifice is a superstitious practice that is still prevalent among many communities across India.
While some believe that ritually sacrificing an animal or a bird can bring good luck, others do it to ward off evil.
But one such animal sacrifice went horribly wrong in Tamil Nadu and the person who was to perform the ritual was killed and the chicken that was to be slaughtered survived, unhurt.
The incident happened in Pallavaram area of Chennai on Thursday.
Rajendran, a 70-year-old daily-wage labourer was about to ‘sacrifice’ a rooster to ward off the ‘evil eye’ at a newly built house when he fell off the building.
According to the police, Rajendran who worked as a mason also used to perform animal sacrifices at housewarmings.
On Thursday he was invited by one T Lokesh, to perform a rooster sacrifice ahead of the housewarming ceremony at a newly constructed a three-storey apartment on Friday.
Lokesh said Rajendran, on Thursday, early morning took the rooster and went to the top of the building to perform the ritual.
But after he did not return for a long time, Lokesh went looking for him and found him lying in a 20-foot-deep pit dug for a lift on the premises.
The rooster that was to be sacrificed also fell off the building but survived and Lokesh found it standing on the body of Rajendran.
He was rushed to the nearby hospital where he was declared dead on arrival.
According to the police, Rajendiran could have accidentally overstepped in the dark, while he was trying to slit the throat of the rooster.
In a related development, a suspected case of witchcraft has surfaced from Chengalpattu district after the head was severed from the body of a ten-year-old girl who was buried in a cemetery in Chitravadi.
The girl, Krithika died on October 14 after an electric post fell on her and her body was buried the next day at the Chitravadi cemetery.
Two days ago, the locals noticed that the place where Krithika was buried was ploughed. A further inspection also found tamarind powder and flowers strewn near her grave.
Krithika’s parents lodged a complaint with the police that some suspicious activity could have taken place on the grave. After the complaint was lodged, police reached the spot and dug out the grave only to find the head missing from the body.
“It was a gruesome sight and the body was headless. It seems that some people who are practicing witchcraft would have severed the head of the little girl and the investigation is on. We are following some leads and will reach the culprits soon,” a senior police official said.
