HINSDALE, IL – Hinsdale is going ahead with its plan for a new public plaza at the Memorial Building, which includes village offices and the library.
The restoration project features landscaping and replacement of the existing concrete patio.
The work is expected to start in August and end in November.
The library is footing half the costs. Under an agreement, the library will be allowed to use the area to place pop-up tents and hold programs in the grassy area.
“That’s how we want the community space to be used – read and relax,” Trustee Michelle Fisher, who spearheaded the project, said at Tuesday’s Village Board meeting.
Eight companies bid on the work, with Lake Zurich-based Apex Landscaping coming in lowest, at $299,000. With a $20,000 additional allowance, the project is set to cost up to $319,000.
The issue was not on the board’s meeting agenda for action. A vote is expected next month.
Village President Tom Cauley asked whether any trustees objected to moving ahead. No one did.
Cauley told administrators that they had the board’s “verbal OK” to proceed with Apex.
Village Manager Kathleen Gargano thanked Fisher for her work, saying the trustee shaped the project and moved it across the finish line.
The project is in commemoration of Hinsdale’s 150th anniversary, which was last year. The village raised $48,535 through a donation campaign.
According to village documents, the new patio will be constructed with a “high-quality material” that will have a “natural stone appearance.”
Also planned are two masonry seat walls built with a brick veneer matching the building.
