GLASTONBURY, CT — A retiring high school teacher generally regarded as the top creative writing instructor in Connecticut has been named Glastonbury’s fourth poet laureate.
The local search committee reached out to Vicky Nordlund in late May and the Glastonbury Town Council approved the appointment Tuesday. Nordlund, who recently retired from a long tenure at Rockville High School in Vernon, will serve a three-year term beginning in July.
Her poems have been published multiple times in anthologies she has authored and in various other publications. She regularly teaches workshops at venues like the Mark Twain House.
Over the past several years, her high school writing students have averaged about 100 state, regional and national creative writing awards by a wide margin. The Rockville High School writing center was recently dedicated to her.
Nordlund will also be working with Eastern Connecticut State University.
“I am so thrilled and honored to be named Glastonbury’s fourth poet laureate Nordlund said of the Glastonbury appointment. “I look forward to bringing life to poetry in a public setting.”
Locally, she will be working on programs for venues like the senior center, the recreation department and the library.
