FARMINGTON, CT — A young Middlefield man has been charged in connection with a serious, 2023 accident that involved an ambulance and a pickup in Farmington, one that, ultimately, claimed a life.
Farmington police last week charged Alexander Joseph Vassiliou, 19, of Baileyville Road, Middlefield, with several charges, including negligent homicide with a motor vehicle.
Other charges on Aug. 29 were illegal operation of a motor vehicle without tint inspection; violation of tinted auto glass requirements; failure to stop on the right side of the road; illegal possession of a weapon in a motor vehicle; failure to wear a seat belt; possession of a controlled substance; illegal possession of cannabis products.
According to online court records, Vassiliou is out on a $50,000 bond and will appear in Hartford Superior Court on Sept. 30.
He was arraigned on Tuesday and the court is awaiting a plea from Vassiliou.
According to Farmington Police Department spokesman Lt. Matthew Corcoran, Vassiliou was involved in a serious crash on Oct. 23, 2023.
He said it happened at the interchange of Route 4 and Interstate 84.
“Sadly, one of the occupants died about a month after the incident due to the injuries sustained from the collision,” Corcoran said.
“Serious vehicle accidents typically take a while for specialists to fully investigate.”
The accident, which happened at 11:47 p.m. that Monday, was between a pickup truck and an ambulance, with four occupants injured.
While three suffered minor injuries, a fourth occupant later died that fall after initially being taken by Lifestar helicopter to an area hospital.
