Either Louis Vuitton was trying to save money on hiring models, or they are
trying to appeal to video game geeks? The fashion house famous for their
luxurious leather goods has cast Lightning from the Final Fantasy video
game series as spring 2016 campaign star. Creative director Nicholas
Ghesquiere partnered with Tetsuya Normura of Square Enix to animate the
campaign images that were debuted on Ghesquiere’s Instagram this week.
Ghesquiere hinted at his affinity for anime and video game inspiration when
he sent several looks down the runway at his spring/summer 2016 show that
were inspired by characters from Sailor Moon, Halo, and Neon Genesis
Evangelion. That runway show proved to be a prelude to his “Series 4”
advertising campaign.
It’s hard to imagine that there’s a big crossover between Final Fantasy
fans and Louis Vuitton fans, but, at least Louis Vuitton’s campaign stands
out from other fashion houses celebrity and model focused campaigns. It’s
certainly something fresh and new for the longstanding luxury label.
It might seem a bit absurd to more traditional fashionistas, but
Ghesquiere’s proven his judgement should be trusted. Under his leadership
as creative director, Louis Vuitton’s sales have improved by 16 percent to
8.7 billion dollars during the first quarter of 2015. He’s a man that knows
how to help the brand bring in the money, there’s no doubt about that.
